George Orwell is fantastic at taking real life political climates and creating a story that exudes the issues at hand without directly speaking on the climate itself. This book was 94 pages and for all 94 pages I was having a whole internal conniption because the plot is so similar to the issues at hand in The United States circa 2025. I listened to the audio book version and it was really cool to listen to him speak so fondly on this time in his life. You can see why Orwell is considered one of the greats. Despite being written almost eighty years ago, Orwell's message is applicable in today's climate which makes the story all the more chilling. 5/5 Stars

This was a difficult book to read, knowing about the Ruby Franke case. It was sobering and heartbreaking to see Shari fight so hard to free her younger siblings, struggle with her self-worth, and be abused by trusted adults inside and outside her family. But ultimately, this is a story of healing and forgiveness and resilience. Highly recommend! 5/5 Stars

Boo! Booo! If I could throw tomatoes at a book and crown it for worst of the year, it would be this book. Which is such a shame because the first half of this book is EXACTLY what I wanted and hoped for and more. Tension up to the first ghostly encounter was chilling and exciting, and then the book gets lost in its own attempt at being complex and unique, that instead of focusing on the amazing atmosphere, haunted house, and paranormal entity; it switches to a whole new story

Characters are one-dimensional and the plot twists are telegraphed from the first few chapters, but the story otherwise is incredibly fun to read. There's a lot of focus and metaphors on working through trauma, which leads to a cliché ending. And despite these many flaws and gripes about the book that I've seen so many reviews on, I still had so much fun reading this book. Mahoney knows how to hook you on a story even if you don't want to be, very enjoyable! 3.75 to 4/5 Stars

Unnerving and weird, but in a good way. While not completely historically accurate, the ending did chill me to the core. The writing was descriptive and made my skin crawl frequently. It made me hate Tarare for his vulgarity, while also humanizing this cannibalistic social outcast. 4/5 Stars
